Move to Cyprus: Visas, Costs and the Real Logic of Relocation

Relocation to the Republic of Cyprus in 2026 depends on citizenship and income source. EU citizens may work without a separate work permit and register through MEU1 for longer residence. Local employment for a third-country national normally needs an employer and combined permit; key personnel at registered Companies with Foreign Interests use criteria including at least €2,500 gross monthly pay, relevant qualifications or experience and a two-to-three-year contract. Digital Nomad applications are open again within a 500-permit ceiling: the applicant works only for an overseas employer or clients and shows at least €3,500 net monthly income; residence is granted for one year and may be renewed for two more. The expedited investor permit starts with €300,000 and secure annual income of at least €50,000. The editorial solo budget is €1,400–2,900 per month.

Why Choose Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus works for EU citizens, specialists with a local employer, remote staff serving companies abroad and qualifying investors. Nicosia concentrates government and professional roles, Limassol international business, and Paphos a quieter coastal lifestyle.

Cyprus is not yet fully in the Schengen area and applies its own entry rules. This page covers territory under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus; Republic authorities may treat arrival through the north as illegal entry.

Cons

Relocation Questions

Is Cyprus in Asia or Europe?

The UN geographic classification places Cyprus in Western Asia, while the Republic of Cyprus is politically an EU and euro-area member. That is why it appears in this Asia directory even though much of its legal and daily-life framework is European.

Do you need a visa for Cyprus?

It depends on nationality. The Republic applies its own national rules and, in October 2026, does not yet issue Schengen visas. Short-stay entry does not authorise local employment; check the passport rule with MFA or the responsible consulate.

How does an EU citizen relocate?

An EU citizen may enter with a passport or ID and work without a separate permit. Residence beyond three months needs a qualifying basis, and the MEU1 Registration Certificate is normally filed within four months of entry.

How does a third-country national obtain work status?

Start with a genuine offer and employer-led process before work. For key personnel at a registered Company with Foreign Interests, official criteria include €2,500 gross monthly pay, a degree or at least two years of relevant experience and a two-to-three-year contract.

Is the Digital Nomad Visa open in 2026?

Yes. On 31 December 2025 the Migration Department said applications were being accepted again under a 500-permit ceiling. The applicant needs an overseas employer or clients and stable net income of at least €3,500 per month.

Can a digital nomad serve Cyprus clients?

Not under this scheme: work and services must be for employers or clients established abroad. The permit lasts one year and may be renewed for a further two; family may reside with the holder but receives no automatic local work right.

What does the investor route require?

The expedited Immigration Permit requires at least €300,000 in eligible new housing, other property, a Cyprus company or fund, plus secure annual income from €50,000. Fund source, investment retention and work rights need separate verification.

When do you become tax resident?

The main test is 183 days. A separate 60-day rule applies only when several conditions align: no other tax residence or stay above 183 days elsewhere, Cyprus business, employment or office, and a permanent Cyprus home. Get an individual tax calculation.

Should you choose Nicosia, Limassol or Paphos?

Nicosia fits government, finance and professional roles and normally costs less than Limassol. Limassol has the largest international-business market and highest rent. Paphos is quieter and remote-work friendly, with a narrower job market.

What does the island's division change?

This page covers the Republic of Cyprus. Use recognised entry points such as Larnaca and Paphos airports or Republic-controlled ports: Republic authorities may treat entry through the north as illegal. Check property title, insurance and Green Line rules separately.
