Move to Tajikistan: Visas, Costs and the Real Logic of Relocation

Relocation to Tajikistan in 2026 starts with passport-specific entry rules. Eligible nationals may use an eVisa for tourism or business; read the authorised stay and entries on the issued document, as the eVisa is not extendable and does not permit employment. A foreign national who enters without an eVisa and stays more than 10 days must register personally with OVIR, and a later address needs separate registration. Employment requires a category M work visa plus a separate permit from the authorised migration body. A category C investment visa may run for up to three years with verified investment from US$500,000 and up to five years at US$1 million. No dedicated digital-nomad visa appears in the official categories reviewed. GBAO and some border areas require additional permits. The editorial solo budget is US$650–1,400 per month, excluding international school, a car and medical evacuation.

Why Choose Tajikistan

Tajikistan works best for specialists with a verified employer, international-project staff, students and substantial investors. Dushanbe has the broadest work and services, Khujand anchors trade and industry in Sughd, while Khorog supports a small number of development and tourism projects in the Pamirs.

An eVisa or tourist status does not authorise employment. Work needs a category M visa and a separate migration-authority permit; GBAO travel needs an additional permit, and healthcare outside Dushanbe is very limited.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Low base living costs and affordable rent relative to many Asian capitals
  • Russian remains useful in Dushanbe, Khujand and business settings
  • Exceptional mountain landscapes and Pamir access with the right permits and preparation
  • Selected roles exist in development, energy, infrastructure, education and mining

Cons

  • The international job market is small and local salaries may not meet foreign-national expectations
  • Healthcare is generally poor and can be almost absent outside Dushanbe, making evacuation cover essential
  • The economy is mainly cash based, cards are rarely accepted and services weaken outside cities
  • Mountain roads, avalanches, landslides, border closures and special permits complicate travel

Relocation Questions

Do you need a visa for Tajikistan?

It depends on nationality and purpose. Some passports have visa-free access, eligible nationals can use an eVisa, while work, study, investment and permanent residence need the matching category. Check the rule for your exact passport.

How long can you stay on an eVisa?

The current MFA instruction states up to 60 calendar days within 90-day eVisa validity, while older official pages still show 45 days. Follow the authorised stay printed on the issued eVisa and confirm it before travel; extension is not available.

Must you register with OVIR?

If you entered without an eVisa and stay more than 10 days, register personally with OVIR. Hotels no longer do this for guests, and a new address needs another registration. Official guidance exempts eVisa holders from this procedure.

How do you obtain work rights?

You need a category M work visa and a separate permit from the authorised migration body. A local employer or host organisation normally starts the process. A tourist or business eVisa does not replace employment status.

Is there a digital-nomad visa?

No dedicated digital-nomad category appears in the official visa rules reviewed. Tourist and business eVisas serve their declared short purpose rather than independent long-term work; permitted activity and tax need case-specific advice.

How does the category C investment visa work?

It serves a verified substantial investor and eligible family. Official rules cite at least US$500,000 for up to three years and US$1 million for up to five years, with evidence from the investment authority, bank, statistics agency, tax body or free economic zone.

When do you become tax resident?

The current Tax Code treats an individual as resident after more than 182 days in any 12-month period beginning or ending in the current calendar year. Resident taxable income covers sources inside and outside Tajikistan; obtain an individual calculation.

Do you need a separate Pamir permit?

Gorno-Badakhshan needs a GBAO permit in addition to a visa, and issuance can stop without notice. Some areas within 20 km of the Afghanistan border need another border permit.

Should you choose Dushanbe, Khujand or Khorog?

Dushanbe has the broadest jobs, flights, housing and healthcare. Khujand costs less and suits trade or industry. Khorog makes sense for a specific project only: permits, difficult roads, weak healthcare and supply constraints matter.

What should you check for healthcare, money and roads?

Insurance should cover treatment and evacuation because care is poor, especially outside Dushanbe. Carry cash, use official exchanges and check roads, weather, communications, fuel and border status; do not enter remote mountains without a prepared plan.
