Cheapest Places to Live Abroad: 5 Asian Bases Compared

The lowest monthly estimate is rarely the cheapest relocation. Compare five Asian bases using one cost basket, then add visas, insurance, deposits and setup cash.

The cheapest places to live abroad are usually secondary cities where long-term rent, local food and public transport stay affordable—but only if you also have a lawful way to remain there. For a solo renter using a consistent 2026 “settled nomad” basket, Da Nang, Hanoi, Penang, Chiang Mai, Galle and Ubud all appear near the low-cost end. The headline number is not a relocation budget: flights, deposits, insurance, immigration costs, tax advice and emergencies sit outside it.

This guide compares five Asian options because that is where Relocate to Asia can add useful country and city context. For a broader price ranking, start with our cheapest countries in Asia comparison. Here, the question is harder: which inexpensive place can support your actual stay?

Quick comparison: what the cheap monthly number includes

The figures below come from the same 2026 city index, so they are more comparable than personal “I live on…” claims. Its basket includes a studio in a nomad-friendly neighbourhood, coworking, groceries, several local restaurant meals, local transport and a SIM. It excludes flights, insurance, entertainment, alcohol and immigration costs. Treat each value as a screening signal, not a quote.

Country and reference cityStandardised monthly signalWhy it can workWhat can break the budget
Vietnam — Da NangAbout $700Low local costs, compact city, beach and urban servicesNo automatic long-term residence; visa rhythm and private healthcare
Thailand — Chiang MaiAbout $935Large long-stay community and broad housing choiceSeasonal air quality, insurance, and eligibility for an appropriate visa
Malaysia — PenangAbout $878English is widely usable and private healthcare is accessibleFormal long-stay routes can require much more capital than monthly living
Indonesia — UbudAbout $1,020Strong remote-work ecosystem and many furnished rentalsTourist-zone rent, transport, insurance and the correct immigration status
Sri Lanka — GalleAbout $855Low local-service costs and a coastal lifestyleImported goods, currency movement and short-stay rules

These city figures were checked on 29 October 2026. Exchange rates and rents move, and two apartments in the same city can produce very different budgets. Rebuild the shortlist in the cost-of-living calculator with your housing and lifestyle assumptions.

1. Vietnam: the lowest city-cost signal, but not a residence plan

Da Nang and Hanoi stand out when the same monthly basket is applied across cities. Local meals, ride-hailing and furnished apartments outside the most international neighbourhoods can keep day-to-day spending low. Da Nang is the calmer beach option; Hanoi offers a deeper urban market but more traffic and seasonal weather.

The weak point is legal continuity. Vietnam’s official e-visa portal states that an e-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and can allow single or multiple entry. That makes it a travel permission, not proof of indefinite residence or work rights. Before signing a long lease, identify the status that matches your passport, activity and intended stay.

Vietnam is strongest for a flexible trial stay and for people whose budget is mostly local. Imported groceries, international schools, frequent flights and comprehensive private insurance move the result far away from the low-cost headline.

2. Thailand: easier to test in several cities

Chiang Mai offers one of the clearest combinations of moderate rent, abundant furnished units and services built around international residents. Bangkok gives better transport and deeper specialist healthcare but usually costs more; islands and Phuket add a beach premium. Our detailed Thailand guide helps compare the cities before choosing one budget.

Thailand also has several immigration categories rather than one universal “expat visa.” The official e-visa service separates tourism, work, study, retirement, family, Destination Thailand Visa and long-term resident routes. Eligibility and permission to work are not interchangeable. Price the route you can actually use, including documents, insurance or financial thresholds, before calling Thailand cheap.

3. Malaysia: a higher entry threshold can buy easier daily life

Penang can compete with lower-cost cities on the standard basket while offering widespread English, established private hospitals and strong food and transport options. Kuala Lumpur generally expands the housing and flight network but can raise rent and commuting costs. Imported alcohol and a car also change the comparison quickly.

Malaysia shows why monthly cost and relocation affordability are different. The official MM2H programme offers renewable social-visit passes, but its current categories include fixed deposits, participation fees and compulsory property requirements. A person who qualifies may value the stability; someone seeking a low-capital move may not. Do not compare Penang’s rent with Vietnam’s rent without comparing the immigration path as well.

4. Indonesia: Ubud is affordable only outside the tourist bubble

Ubud remains cheaper than many Western remote-work hubs, but “Bali price” is not one market. Walkable central areas, villas with pools, imported food and daily ride-hailing can push spending above the index. A quieter neighbourhood and a locally oriented routine can reduce it, but transport and flood-season access become part of the decision.

Use Indonesia’s official immigration portal to choose a visa category that matches the purpose of stay. A tourist entry is not a general work authorisation. For a realistic first month, add temporary accommodation while viewing properties, a deposit, local transport setup and health cover before multiplying the monthly estimate by twelve.

5. Sri Lanka: low local costs with more volatility

Galle produces a low standardised monthly signal, and local food, trains and services can be inexpensive. The trade-off is a smaller market for imported goods and greater sensitivity to currency, fuel and supply changes. Colombo offers broader healthcare and business services but is a different budget.

Sri Lanka’s immigration department describes the ETA as short-visit permission. Its tourist-visa page also says tourist status does not allow employment and should not be used for long residence through repeated visits. That distinction matters more than a cheap villa. Confirm the current entry and residence path for your nationality before committing to a long lease.

The first-month test: the number most rankings omit

A cheap overseas base can require two to four times the normal monthly spend at the start. Build a separate setup budget rather than hiding it inside an annual average:

  • one-way travel, baggage and temporary accommodation;
  • rental deposit, advance rent and agent charges where applicable;
  • visa applications, translations, legalisation and required trips;
  • insurance, initial appointments and regular medication;
  • SIM, transport, household basics and coworking setup;
  • an emergency exit fund that is not used for routine spending.

Use the relocation budget planner for this cash requirement. A country that costs $150 more each month but needs no repeated border trips or expensive workaround can be cheaper over the first year.

How to choose a cheap and safe place to live

“Safe” cannot be reduced to a national score. Check the specific neighbourhood, transport after dark, road risk, air quality, flood or earthquake exposure, access to appropriate healthcare and current government travel advice. Then compare these factors with your age, health, family and work pattern.

  1. Choose the lawful stay first. Filter out countries where your realistic visa route does not fit.
  2. Fix the household and housing standard. A room, studio and two-bedroom apartment are not comparable.
  3. Price one named city. National averages conceal the largest rent differences.
  4. Add annual and setup costs. Insurance, flights and deposits belong in the decision.
  5. Run a 30–90 day trial. Do not use a holiday week to predict long-term spending.

For a side-by-side shortlist, use the country comparison tool. The cheapest place is the one where your legal stay, housing standard, healthcare needs and first-year cash all work together—not the city with the smallest number in a ranking.
