Living longer in Asia

Long-stay visas in Asia: compare the real route

A long validity does not reveal how long each stay lasts, what work is permitted or whether the status leads to residence. Define the scenario first, then compare programmes.

Four different scenarios

ScenarioTypical basisMain risk
Remote workoverseas contract, income or savingslocal clients may be prohibited
Retirementage, pension, deposit or insurancea long visa may not lead to permanent status
Talentqualification, salary or sectorthe exact category must be proved
Capitaldeposit, investment or propertymoney may be locked while status remains conditional

What “five years” may actually mean

It can mean a five-year visa with 180 days per entry, an annual permission renewed repeatedly, a status with minimum-presence rules, or a programme renewed while a deposit remains. Record validity, stay per entry, extension, reporting, re-entry and maximum total stay as separate fields.

Then verify activity. Some programmes expressly cover overseas remote work; others are designed for retirement or lifestyle and do not grant local work rights. The label “long stay” is not work permission.

A practical shortlist

Thailand

DTV, LTR and retirement routes solve different problems. Compare savings, income, insurance, stay pattern and work rights.

Malaysia

DE Rantau and MM2H are not substitutes: one focuses on remote professionals, the other on financial conditions for long residence.

Taiwan, Japan and Korea

Professional and nomad routes can be strong but may be limited by income, nationality, occupation or duration.

Indonesia and the Philippines

Remote, second-home and retirement scenarios exist; verify a live application channel, not only a programme announcement.

Ten comparison fields

  1. eligible nationalities;
  2. minimum age;
  3. income and accepted source;
  4. savings, deposit or investment;
  5. insurance and coverage;
  6. stay per entry;
  7. renewal and re-entry;
  8. permitted work;
  9. dependants and spouse work rights;
  10. tax and path to a more durable status.

Verification plan

Open the authority's portal, select nationality and filing location, and save the current checklist. Convert currencies with headroom rather than holding exactly the threshold. Compare both the first year and renewal: medical certificates, document legalisation, insurance, deposits and travel can make an apparently cheap programme expensive.

Common questions

Is a long-stay visa a residence permit?

Not necessarily. It may describe only visa validity or permitted stay. Check the legal status on the authority's site.

May I work?

Only when the programme or a separate permission expressly covers the intended activity.

Which programme is easiest?

The one where real income, age, work and family circumstances meet the rules without aggressive interpretation.

This page supports relocation planning. It is not legal, tax, medical or financial advice.

How To Turn This Page Into A Relocation Decision

Use this page as one part of a sequence: legal stay, budget, city, housing and practical trade-offs. Skipping that order is how people make expensive relocation mistakes.

Fact Before Preference

Preferences matter, but facts decide feasibility. Visa rules, income proof, healthcare access and costs should come before beaches, food and lifestyle impressions.

The Safe Order

Check stay length and renewal first. Then check income and documents. After that, compare living costs, insurance, housing and the city you would actually live in.

Who Needs Extra Verification

Families, retirees, people with medical needs and anyone planning a long stay should verify official rules more deeply before making paid commitments.

What should I do next?

Compare one alternative country, read the visa guide and verify the official source.

Should I pay for anything yet?

Not until the visa route, budget and documents make sense together.
