Banking in Asia: accounts, KYC and international transfers

Account access depends on more than nationality. A bank checks status, address, tax residence, source of funds and purpose. One branch refusal is not always a national ban, but “we open for everyone” is a warning sign.

Quick answer

Keep a functioning home account and card, prepare address and source-of-funds evidence, and retain a backup transfer method. After obtaining local status, compare two banks on documentation, international transfers, an English app and support for foreign residents.

Typical document pack

  • passport and valid visa or residence card;
  • local address through lease, registration or utility bill;
  • local tax number where required;
  • employment letter, contract or business documents;
  • source-of-funds evidence such as payslips, returns or sale contract;
  • foreign tax number and CRS declaration;
  • local phone and sometimes an opening deposit.

The exact list changes by bank, branch, nationality and product. An old forum screenshot is not today's official requirement.

What KYC means in practice

The bank needs to understand identity, residence, money source and expected transactions. Activity inconsistent with the profile can trigger questions or a temporary restriction. Answer consistently and retain evidence for large transfers.

Compare more than the monthly fee

  1. incoming and outgoing SWIFT;
  2. exchange spread;
  3. app limits and transaction approval;
  4. access abroad and phone-number changes;
  5. language support;
  6. joint accounts and extra cards;
  7. statements for immigration and tax;
  8. non-resident policy after departure.

Do not mix personal and business banking

If you provide services or manage a company, confirm whether a personal account may receive commercial payments. For a business account the bank reviews ownership, customers, contracts, website, turnover and counterparty countries. A shell company without clear activity or source of funds faces more friction.

Do not accept a nominee account, another person's card or an arrangement giving an agent control of online banking. This creates loss, closure and legal risk.

Tax and information exchange

A bank asks tax residence separately from immigration status. CRS may cause account information to be sent to a participating tax-residence jurisdiction. A foreign account can create home-country notification or reporting duties. Obtain advice for the actual case.

Plan for a restriction

  • keep funds in at least two independent institutions;
  • do not hold the entire reserve on one card;
  • update address, phone and tax status;
  • prepare evidence before a large transfer;
  • do not bypass bank security with another person's device or credentials.

Common questions

Can a visitor open an account?

Some jurisdictions and products allow it; others require residence or a local link. Check the bank's official list.

Why do two branches answer differently?

Product, risk profile and internal practice can differ. Ask for written requirements and do not hide a previous refusal.

Test the full route before moving a large amount

A transfer can involve the sending bank, correspondent banks, the receiving bank and a currency provider. Compare the quoted fee, exchange spread, intermediary deductions, arrival currency and expected time. Send a small test first and keep the transfer receipt, contract or invoice supporting the payment.

Do not describe a transfer inaccurately to make it pass faster. Repeated round amounts, payments from unrelated third parties or activity inconsistent with the stated account purpose can cause review. If funds come from property, investments, inheritance or a company distribution, prepare the chain of evidence before initiating the payment.

Card access also needs a test. Check foreign ATM fees, dynamic currency conversion, online merchant verification and whether the bank sends one-time codes only to a local number. Retain one independent card for travel and emergencies.

Banking before, during and after relocation

  1. Before departure: tell the home bank where appropriate, update contacts and download recent statements.
  2. After arrival: obtain lawful status, address evidence and a tax number before booking the bank appointment.
  3. At opening: describe expected salary, transfers and counterparties accurately.
  4. After activation: test login, a small transfer, card payment and statement download.
  5. After status changes: update residence, tax declarations and source-of-funds documents.

When leaving a country, do not abandon the account. Ask whether it can remain open as non-resident, settle cards and automatic debits, download statements and obtain a closure confirmation. Keep records for the period required by relevant tax rules.

Protect the account from the first day

Use the official banking app, a unique password and the strongest available authentication. Never share an OTP, remote-control access or a full card image. A legitimate bank may ask for updated KYC evidence, but it will not ask you to move funds to a “safe account”. Contact the bank through the number in the app or on the card, not a link from an unexpected message.

Record the conditions in writing

For each bank, note eligible status, address evidence, opening deposit, monthly balance, debit-card fee, ATM network, domestic transfer system, SWIFT capability and support language. Add the date, branch and source of each answer so a verbal promise is not mistaken for a rule.

Ask what happens when a visa expires or tax residence changes. Some products continue for non-residents; others are restricted or closed. Confirm access to statements after departure and whether a salary account changes fees when the employer link ends.

Keep a secure inventory with masked account numbers, support contacts, cards and automatic payments. Update it after every move. It helps freeze a lost card, migrate recurring bills and close unused accounts without leaving small balances or unresolved fees.
